Lovely portrait shoot the other weekend. The barmitzvah is in a few weeks and I hope the weather gets a little better for them …
One of things I ‘m starting to notice more and more is how my photographic style is developing now that a) my photography is no longer mostly just for me and b) I develop deeper understanding.
Photography is like any other creative process. You start by learning the basics, emulate what others do and once armed with the necessary knowledge begin to do stuff on your own.
I’m starting to better understand how my photographic eye works and can see beyond the in camera picture to what I want the finished image to be after it’s taken to the post production stage. Do I feel like all of my pictures should need as little treatment as possible, like others do.
I don’t think it matters as long as I get the result I want, the pictures don’t look over processed and the client is happy. I’m certainly not going to win medals for doing as little as possible to the image once in Lightroom or Photoshop.
I’ve added a comments page to the Gander Photography website
Come take a look at the feedback I’ve received here.

I don’t do a lot of still life work, it’s quite hard to build a relationship with the client when the client is a flower, but I do a little everynow and again. At the beginning of the year my wife and I received some flowers from the amazing Helen and Susan Flowers.
I couldn’t really let them go without taking some pics.
It struck me that after I had taken the pics that a poster for Helen and Susan might be a nice thing to do and be well received. It also gave me a chance to work on some creative ideas that I had in mind.

There’s not much I enjoy more than taking a portrait there is a different approach to a ‘studio’ shoot than an event and as you would imagine it’s all just a lot calmer. I get more time to interact with the client and more time to review the photos before moving on.
I particularly enjoy taking pics of kids. I send the parents to a different room and just have fun. I try to convey the fun I’m having taking the pictures in the pictures. It’s of course a lot easier with a willing model but in the end even the most reluctant model will come round.
I had great fun with these four kids thou’ the baby almost took a tumble !!
Here’s some selected pics from the shoot.

A little late getting this one out, been a busy month for Gander this month. Infact I’m writing this for the first time from an iPod whilst on the Tube so bear with me if it looks a little wonky or the autocomplete takes a few strange turns at the lights.
All in all March was busy with a number of key jobs.
At the beginning of the month I had the delight of taking Barmitzvah portraits for the Davis family. A delightful early Spring afternoon and wonderful group who had gathered together from a number of far flung locations. It was a real pleasure getting the shots. You can see them here
Later in the week a Charity dinner for a local school. This however was a sit down dinner for around 250 people and was attended by the Chief Rabbi. Whilst an entertaining speaker I had to concentrate on getting the shots and completing the brief. I had compete access to the floor from every angle and used the whole space.

Finally that week I had another function attended by the Chief Rabbi to shoot, when my local synagogue inducted the new Rabbi. I’ve never attended one of these, opportunities like that don’t come along everyday, and my family and
I have also come close with the new Rabbi in the short time he has been serving us. I was lucky enough to have a friend shoot second camera for me. In this case his services were invaluable as the were so many attendees that walking space was limited. I’ve not worked with a second shooter before but I know how he thinks and we ended up communicating with nods and winks and swapped bodies rather than changed lenses to get all the shots. A few people asked me how long we had worked together for as we were always one step ahead of eachother. I didn’t always have the courage to tell them it was the first time.
Pictures from the event are here
The interesting thing about both of those jobs was the quick turn around time required for press releases of the photos to local papers and publications. They turned into long and exhausting days.
And so onto April where I hardly have a free weekend day without some form of photography. There’s a wedding dress shoot, pre Barmitzvah shoot and party for a 11 year old and dozen friends to cram in.
Please keep reading and please if you like what you see leave a comment.
Last weekend Pinner shul inducted the new Rabbi for the community. Having served the community for a few months now my family and I have grown very close to the Rabbi and his family and I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph the event. I don’t imagine I will attend the induction of a new rabbi again for sometime, if ever and this was a very special event that was attended not only by the community but by the Chief Rabbi also.
Whilst at an event a little while ago I took some pics of the pianist who was entertaining the reception crowd. Given he was sitting again a blank wall and below a speaker full length shots didn’t seem to be the order of the day so I put a 200mm f2.8 lens on and went for some real close shots. These are the few I quite liked ..
So I’ve had plenty of time to edit pictures of the Chief Rabbi from earlier in the week and have selected few of my favourites. Plenty more to go through …
Last weekend I spent few hours at the Watford Hilton with the delightful Eden family. Commissioned for a set of portraits prior to the party in the evening I met the family who had gathered for the first time, in a long time from a number of wide and distant locations.
Here are a few of the pictures I took, if you want to see more of these take a look at the full album here Gander Photography website
